How Were the Nike Air Jordan 4 Created? A Look at the Popular Model

How do you design the next version of one of the most iconic sneakers in history? Tinker Hatfield and his team faced a real challenge when they set out to create the Nike Air Jordan 4, which was meant to be another standout model in the Jordan line and the successor to the popular Air Jordan 3.

The first Black Cement and White Cement models were showcased in Sports Illustrated magazine in November 1988. The sneakers officially saw the light of day at the NBA All-Star Game in February 1989, where basketball legend Michael Jordan put them to the test, scoring an impressive 28 points in the Air Jordan 4 Black Cement.

The AJ4 went on sale later that same year, becoming the first model in the Air Jordan 4 line available worldwide. Despite mixed feelings about them and a slightly higher price ($10 more than their predecessor), these one-of-a-kind sneakers quickly won over fans around the world.

New Features and Look of the Nike Air Jordan 4. What's New?

The Nike Air Jordan 4 introduced a new technology – a mesh layer, achieved by using soft plastic, designed to make the sneaker more breathable. But what set this design apart were the famous wings, which let you customize the fit with as many as 18 different lacing options!

The Nike Air Jordan 4 came across as a mid-height sneaker that weighed less than its predecessor. The Air Jordan 4 had a different design from earlier models. They emphasized a more luxurious character.

The focus here was on functionality. Hatfield used synthetic Durabuck leather, which made them lighter and ready for heavy use. For Nike, the benefit was twofold, because Durabuck was also more economical and did not require the use of animal hides.

The Shot – An Iconic Moment for the Nike Air Jordan 4

One of the most memorable moments linked to the Nike Air Jordan 4 was undoubtedly "The Shot". With the series tied 2-2, both teams were fighting for a decisive win.

Shooting over his defender, Cavaliers player Craig Ehlo, Jordan secured himself and his sneakers an unforgettable place in basketball history. He scored a total of 44 points in that game.
