This model was designed by Bill Bowerman, a legendary coach and co-founder of Nike. The shoes were meant to stand out for their high durability and a unique, timeless style.

This style has drawn a lot of interest from both everyday wearers and sneakerheads, thanks to well-known figures such as Bella Hadid and Kendrick Lamar, as well as the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, which also gave the silhouette and the brand a fresh boost.

The 1994 film “Forest Gump” also helped kick this off, when the main character got his first pair of running shoes, the Nike Cortez. Since then, that colorway has become iconic, and it still is today.

New Balance 550

Every major sneaker brand has its iconic model — Nike has the Air Force 1, adidas has the Stan Smith and the Superstar, and finally New Balance found its own in the 550.

They're the newest of all the models mentioned, but people have definitely fallen in love with them.

The 550 model debuted in 1989 as a low-profile alternative to the 650 model, which was then New Balance's most popular basketball shoe.

This solved several problems that both the 650 and the 480 had.

Both the 650 and the 480 had high patent leather uppers — they were clearly trying to compete with the Jordan 1. However, the padded collars, while supportive, were not nearly as breathable.

The low-top 550 was more comfortable, though it did less for the company's real success. As a result, it didn't bring in big profits, but that was also because New Balance didn't have stars as big as the more popular basketball brands like Nike or Converse.

However, innovations in shoe construction made the New Balance 550 popular among runners, but they didn't carry over to basketball, where models like the Reebok Pump and Nike Air ruled.

The 550 faded from pop culture as quickly as it appeared. A few years ago, however, it made a big comeback and is now very popular in the fashion world.

They are available in more than a dozen colorways, so you're sure to find your favorite among them.
